Information for Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Photo Workshop
October 7-12, 2017 Saturday afternoon at 5:00 through Thursday afternoon at 2:00
Please note, we are starting early to get in an extra session at the Balloon Fiesta!
Cost: $1,360 alumni; $1,480 non-beginner
We accept cash and credit card payments through PayPal. Please e-mail a copy of your completed Application pages, so we can coordinate it with your payment/acceptance.
We highly recommend trip insurance that includes travel health insurance, especially for overseas trips. You don't want to be cut off if you get sick before or during a trip and find that you have no recource or support.
Click here for a link to a page we have written specifically on travel insurance.
You will want to make sure that the company you select is a BBB Accreduted business with an A+ rating. Links for this are here.
Our travel agent and we have used Travelex for years, but that is not to say that there are not other reputable companies that you may prefer.
If you do decide to use Travelex, please mention that you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures and give them code BCPA 27-6058.
Accommodations: (Links sometimes require pop-up windows.)
We have obtained a fabulous rate for our participants at the smoke-free
Inn at Santa Fe
8376 Cerrillos Road
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87507
$95/night + tax. This rate will extend two days on the front and/or back end of the workshop..
In order to take advantage of this discounted rate and get one of our blocked rooms, you will need to call one of the numbers above and say you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. During the Balloon Fiesta, rooms can double or even triple in price, so we are very lucky to have obtained these rates.
In cases such as this workshop location, the room rate actually includes our daily imaging room. Normally, that room incurs a hefty fee. So unless you are local, please join the rest of your fellow participants. Otherwise, expect to pay a surcharge of up to $75. This obviously will cost a lot more than a few dollars saved with Expedia or other booking sites. Besides, it is more fun and more practical for carpooling if we all stay in the same location.
If you miss out on any of the above, try TripAdvisor for other choices. Take advantage of the long weekend to return to some of your favorite workshop locations or explore others.
The nearest major Airport is
Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), less than an hour from the hotel. And for those who don't want to rent a car, consider Sandia Shuttle Xpress that runs between ABQ and Santa Fe.
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time-consuming as we all search for the best fare. We have two travel agents that we can highly recommend — Cheryl Darwell or her associate Sharon Erickson at www.Cheryl-CruisePlanners.com in West End, NC. They are both also American Express Travel Representatives. They are both well traveled and are very savvy in so much more than just cruises. They have access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.
With domestic fares, they do need to charge a fee, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Cheryl or Sharon at at 877-693-4535 (East Coast) or e-mail them as noted above.
Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must either book through our travel agent, or use our links and make your reservations yourself. This information is noted for each workshop under Accommodations above. Flying with Photo Equipment
It is always good to check with your airline before traveling to make sure you are complying with their current rules. Alas, TSA no longer has guidelines and passes consumers along to their airline of choice. Be prepared to do some deep digging.
We NEVER check our camera gear; nor do we ever check our laptops. The airlines will not cover these, and even if they did, you would be up a creek without those items. Common sense dictates that you allow plenty of extra time should TSA ask you to empty your bag and sift through each item one by one.
You may also want to select your airline based on its willingness to work with photographers...
Remember, you may have to check your bag plane-side before boarding smaller aircraft. We have done this numerous times over the decades without any problems ... knock on wood!
If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help
you, but that is not a guarantee.
Finally, too many people bring too much gear. The less you worry about your gear, the more you will see what is around you.
Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage, in fact insist on, car sharing. It is also friendlier to our environment.
If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans.
We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available.
