We are in the process of negotiating what promises to be another very good rate that includes our imaging room at the smoke-free:

Fairfield Inn & Suites
6333 Encelia Avenue
Twentynine Palms, CA  92277
1-760-361-5000

In order to take advantage of our discounted rate of $104/night + $11.46 tax) and get one of our blocked rooms, you will need to book through Paula Jaye at 978-372-0226 and tell her you are with Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures.

IMPORTANT:
In cases such as this workshop location, the room rate actually includes our daily imaging room. Normally, that room incurs a hefty fee. So unless you are local, please join the rest of your fellow participants. Otherwise, expect to pay a surcharge of up to $75. This obviously will cost a lot more than a few dollars saved with Expedia or other booking sites. Besides, it is more fun and more practical for carpooling if we all stay in the same location.

Our block of rooms will be released around October 15, again, to be updated, so be sure to make your reservations right away. You are never charged for your rooms until much later, usually not until you actually check in.

If you miss out on the above, ask Paula what she can find for you or try TripAdvisor for other choices. Stay longer and return to some of your favorite workshop locations or explore others with your honed skills.

Airport: The nearest major Airport is Los Angeles International (LAX), a tad under 3 hours away; John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana (Orange County), CA, a bit over 2-1/2 hours away, and McCarran International in Las Vegas, NV (LAS), a hair under 3-3/4 hours away.

Travel Agent:
Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time-consuming as we all search for the best fare. We have two travel agents that we can highly recommend —Sharon Erickson at www.Cheryl-CruisePlanners.com in West End, NC. She is an American Express Travel Representative, is well traveled, and is very savvy in so much more than just cruises. She has access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

With domestic fares, she does need to charge a fee, usually around $35, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Cheryl at at 877-693-4535 (East Coast) or e-mail her as noted above.

Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must either book through our travel agent, or use our links and make your reservations yourself. This information is noted for each workshop under Accommodations above.

Flying with Photo Equipment
It is always good to check with your airline before traveling to make sure you are complying with their current rules. Alas, TSA no longer has guidelines and passes consumers along to their airline of choice. Be prepared to do some deep digging.

We NEVER check our camera gear; nor do we ever check our laptops. The airlines will not cover these, and even if they did, you would be up a creek without those items. Common sense dictates that you allow plenty of extra time should TSA ask you to empty your bag and sift through each item one by one.

You may also want to select your airline based on its willingness to work with photographers...

Remember, you may have to check your bag plane-side before boarding smaller aircraft. We have done this numerous times over the decades without any problems ... knock on wood!

If you are a member of a photo association, carry your membership card. It may help you, but that is not a guarantee.

Finally, too many people bring too much gear. The less you worry about your gear, the more you will see what is around you.

Navigating the maze of overseas flights can be daunting, totally frustrating, and time consuming as we all search for the best fare.  We have two travel agents that we can highly recommend — Cheryl Darwell or her associate Sharon Erickson at Cheryl-CruisePlanners.com in West End, NC. They are both also American Express agents. They are both well traveled and are very savvy in so much more than just cruises. They have access to resources unavailable to us mere mortals and can often find fares that are below the ones on the Internet.

With domestic fares, she does need to charge a fee, but for many, it is well worth it. Call Paula at 978-372-0226 on the east coast or e-mail her.  It is not our custom to recommend outside travel resources, so this lets you know how highly we regard Paula.

So, particularly for help with international air, train, and travel-related questions, call Cheryl or Sharon at at 877-693-4535 (East Coast) or e-mail them as noted above.

Please note that in cases where we negotiate special rates with our hotels, you must either book through our travel agent, or use our links and make your reservations yourself. This information is noted for each workshop under Accommodations above. Rental Cars:
Because we stop in locations where the roads and streets may be narrow and parking minimal, we encourage, in fact insist on, car sharing. It is also friendlier to our environment.

If you are interested in sharing a rental car with others, let us know. We'll pool those who respond and get you in touch with one another to make your own plans.

We can't guarantee that there will be takers, so we also recommend that you rent a car, as you can always cancel later. That way, you won't find your car of choice no longer available.
