We have long wanted to do a workshop in Key West for that crazy, wonderful, artistic, over-the-top Fantasy Fest that is closing in on 40 years of fun and frivolity.

As the official website notes:
    "Fantasy Fest is an annual 10-day party in paradise for grown-ups. Started in 1979 by a small group of Key West locals, the party was created to bring visitors to the island in what was a typically quiet, but beautiful season. It worked. Fantasy Fest has grown every year since its inception and is now the wildest extravaganza around! Fun-loving revelers from around the globe bring their creativity and imaginations as they descend upon Key West each year in October for 10 days filled with costuming, parades, libations, and excitement!"
Key West itself has a lot of history. Juan Ponce de León was the first European to land here in 1521. Cayo Hueso was the original Spanish name for the island of Key West when Florida became a Spanish territory. Under Spanish rule, a fishing and salvage village with a small garrison was established. It passed through English hands and eventually became part of the United States in 1822.

Wildlife artist and conservationist John J. Audubon and author Ernest Hemingway loved it, and their houses still stand. With charming architecture dating back to the mid-19th century, Old Town Key West is a visual delight. With windows that cascade down to porch level, gingerbread decoration, and picket fences, it looks like a pristine movie set.

But back to Fantasy Fest...

The 2018 schedule is already posted. Peruse the site, and you will find lots of information.

There are special events galore, parades, people in costumes - even some daring who have had their bodies painted - all willing to be photographed. After all, this has the same feeling as Venice's Carnivale where people are there to be seen.

We will explore different facets of this tropical island-city and revel in photographing the amazing costumes and people having a great time. Since this is an alumni workshop, we will head out at noon on the first day. And while the workshop officially ends on Tuesday at 2:00, Arnie and I will be staying over that last night, and anyone who also stays is welcome to join us for more photography, fun, and frivolity!
Scouting Option:
For those who want more time with Margo and Arnie, we offer the opportunity to scout and shoot with them before most of our domestic workshops. We limit this to two people per day who ride in the car or walk around (depending upon the workshop) with the instructors. During these days while Arnie and Margo do their own photography and final scouting for the workshop, there is also lots of individual instruction and discussions about photography.

Practical Details:
We start out with some technical information before heading out for our first session of photography. Our workshops include the following:
  • Maximum 6-to-1 ratio students to instructors;
  • Primer booklet to help you get started;
  • Early-morning and late-afternoon shoots for domestic workshops;
  • Daily downloading of your images and processing (we use the latest version of Lightroom);
  • Lots of individual instruction in both the field and classroom;
  • Daily critiques, both individual and group for domestic workshops and most overseas ones;
  • Discussions on various aspects of photography, including digital workflow; and
  • Lots of fun and frivolity throughout!
One critical note:  if you are contemplating buying a new camera, please make sure you have a basic working knowledge of it BEFORE you come to one of our workshops. There are so many variations amongst camera brands, and even within each brand, far too many for us to know and thus be able to help you.

FAQs:
If you have not already done so, be sure to check our FAQs for questions you may have as well as for equipment and installed downloads you need to bring to the workshop including, if necessary, the free, 30-day, trial versions of Adobe and other imaging products.

Rooms can go quickly, so best to not wait too long before signing up. Our special room rates are for participants only. Once we receive your application and monies due at the time of sign-up, we will let our hotel know you are, indeed, with us.
