Maine
Coast & Lighthouses Photo Workshop
with Print Element Included May 21-24, 2009
Thursday afternoon at 1:00 through Sunday afternoon at 2:00
Travel to New England and join our digital photography workshop, strengthen your
eye, and learn about the magic of light on the craggy and magnificent Maine coast.
As a open-and-friendly, "crusty" New Englander, The Barefoot Contessa
spent her childhood Down East sailing in her dad's classic wooden yawl. This
has given her a special insight into the Maine coast and what it has to offer.
In later years, she got to know Maine by land, so she has both perspectives
on the magic of light and where the good photographic opportunities are. Not
only are there lighthouses to photograph, but beautiful landscapes, charming
fishing villages, and a stunning coastline punctuated by rocky outcroppings,
cozy harbors sprinkled with lobster boats, and the famous Maine fir trees.
And we mustn't forget the Maine lobster, best eaten, not in a restaurant,
but in a "lobster shack " hanging out over the water in some of
the many picturesque harbors that Margo has known for many decades.
This part of the world has a lot of history, a place where the front doors in
the old, weathered-gray shingled "Capes" face the ocean, a place where
colorful lobster pots dot the landscape along with neat stacks of traps, a place
where the surf crashes onto the hard granite coastal rocks, a place where a friendly
fisherman will chat with you as you eat in a local establishment. This is also
where the tall ships plied their trade, where lighthouse beams still warn sailors
off the trecherous coastline, and where there are a myriad of locations that
have attracted famous artists for centuries.
We will be based in charming New Harbor in the heart of some of Margo's favorite locations, subjects of many of her shots published in calendars, travel magazines, and coffee-table books. Take advantage of the long weekend to putter around after the workshop ends and return to your favorite area or explore others.
We start off the first day at 1:00 with some technical information before heading out for an afternoon of photography, returning in time for
our evening reception. Our workshop includes the following:
Maximum 6-to-1 ratio students to instructors
Opening wine-and-pizza reception;
Primer booklet to help you get started;
Early-morrning and late-afternoon shoots;
Mid-day processing and tweaking your images with Photoshop and Lightroom;
Epson printing element with a booklet of step-by-step instructions;
Lots of individual instruction in both the field and classroom;
Critiques, both individual and group;
Discussions on various aspects of photography, including digital workflow;
Final group critique and show; and
Lots of fun and frivolity througout!
If you have not already done so, check our FAQs for
equipment and installed downloads you need to bring to the workshop including,
if necessary, the free, 30-day, trial versions of the Adobe products.
In our print element, our instructors will show
you the ins and outs of successfully and easily turning your favorite digital
images into stunning prints using a high-quality Epson printer. In fact,
in all our domestic workshops, you will end up making a lovely, large, archival print of
one of your workshop photographs made with Epson paper and inks to take home with you.
As we said above, our tag line reads, "Create great photos; make great
prints!"
