Ahhh, Paris, that wonderful, romantic City of Light, is steeped in culture and history as shown in its architecture, monuments, and museums.

We have timed our visit to take advantage of lower rates in the city.

The city is divided into 20 arrondissements, or districts, and while we can't possibly visit them all in this short time, we'll show you our favorite locations to photograph.

We'll take you to places with such familiar names as the Latin Quarter, la Rive Gauche (Left Bank) and its Bouquinistes (book stalls), Notre Dame with those amazing gargoyles, the Louvre, la Tour Eiffel, always amazing, Saint-Germain-des-Prés (where we will be based), Montmartre, to name a few. There are also the arches, monuments, and wonderful streets, both broad and narrow.

We may see toy sailboats racing on the ponds where my dad sailed the same-styled boats when he was six, pétanque (a form of boules) being played in the parks, the Bateaux-Mouches and Batobus making their trips up and down the Seine, art exhibits, the bridges with their different characters, and maybe music in one of our favorite areas of the city. And there is so much more that makes Paris unique.

We will try to take in some galleries to introduce you to photographers whose work you may not yet know. That all depends upon what is showing where!

This is where The Barefoot Contessa's English granny took part in café society back in the 20s, and not much has changed since then. You'll see people gathered in cafés intensely discussing art and the issues of the day. We'll find time to take breaks at these little restaurants, grab a bite to eat, and give our feet a rest, for we will be walking a lot. It is the way to really see and savor the city and, of course, to photograph it.

And speaking of conversation, Margo speaks fluent French and has since she was in grade school. If you can manage a "Bonjour" (hello), "S'il vous plaît" (seal voo play = please), or "Merci" (mare-see = thank you), it is always appreciated! The French "r" is made with a gargle without the gurgle.

For those who are also joining us on our Barging in Southern Provence adventure, we offer you a bit of a discount.

As always, we will encourage you to seek your own vision and teach you how elements of composition and the magic of light work in concert to make wonderful photographs. You will be inspired by the sights and sounds of this magical city.

Scouting Option:
For those who want more time with Margo and Arnie, we offer the opportunity to scout and shoot with them before most of our domestic workshops. We limit this to two people per day who ride in the car with the instructors. During these days while Arnie and Margo do their own photography and final scouting for the workshop, there is also lots of individual instruction and discussions about photography.

Practical Details:
We start out with some technical information before heading out for our first afternoon of photography. Our workshops include the following:
  • Maximum 6-to-1 ratio students to instructors;
  • Primer booklet to help you get started;
  • Early-morning and late-afternoon shoots for domestic workshops;
  • Daily downloading of your images and processing (we use the latest version of Lightroom);
  • Lots of individual instruction in both the field and classroom;
  • Daily critiques, both individual and group for domestic workshops and most overseas ones;
  • Discussions on various aspects of photography, including digital workflow; and
  • Lots of fun and frivolity throughout!
One critical note:  if you are contemplating buying a new camera, please make sure you have a basic working knowledge of it BEFORE you come to one of our workshops. There are so many variations amongst camera brands, and even within each brand, far too many for us to know and thus be able to help you.

FAQs:
If you have not already done so, be sure to check our FAQs for questions you may have as well as for equipment and installed downloads you need to bring to the workshop including, if necessary, the free, 30-day, trial versions of Adobe and other imaging products.

Rooms can go quickly, so best to not wait too long before signing up. Once we receive your application and monies due at the time of sign-up, we will let our hotel know you are, indeed, with us.
