"Do you really believe all of these client comments? They are glowing in their praise and unanimous in telling about a fantastic experience. So why should I write anything?
"I am 78 years old and have been asked, 'Why do you need to be in this workshop? Don’t you know how to photograph well by now?'
"Margo and Arnie lead very special workshops. Workshops filled with interesting imagery and worthwhile instruction. Each student is encouraged to develop a unique vision, and one of the most interesting aspects of any workshop is learning from other members of the group. I continue to be amazed at what different people see at the same location.
"Taking a picture requires patience, planning and practice. I watched in absolute awe while one member of our group very carefully composed each picture before pushing the shutter button. Watching her was inspirational for me. In some ways the experience at that moment was more valuable than my own picture taking.
"Margo and Arnie also spend time with each student on the computer and again, though I consider myself somewhat computer literate, there is always information to be learned. Lightroom is stressed for good reason.
"Another reason for choosing this particular workshop is that Margo and Arnie have different personalities and different strengths. But they share a view of photography as an art form and a passion for sharing their enthusiasm with others. What more can one ask?
"
George Dalsheimer, The Caymans
This was George's third workshop with us with two more following in the following month.
"I thoroughly enjoyed your workshop. I appreciate your patience with my lack of Lightroom knowledge and my mishaps with my camera. After several days of rest, I spent some time reading and working on my pictures, and it was like a light bulb went on in my head. It was good to have a clear head and some time alone to process all the information. I have a long way to go but don't feel quite as inept as I did in class.
"I already miss the comraderie of our group. There were lots of laughs (particularly at one end of the table), and the talent in our group was amazing. I loved the gallery of photos and the pictures of our group. We had a wonderful time with my family in Acadia. We had a lovely house right on the water where we could watch the sale boats come and go. We did quite a bit of hiking, biking and kayaking. And of course lots of good food and wine. We arrived home last night. It is always tough to come back to reality.
" I hope you are enjoying your time with family and friends. I am looking forward to another workshop
"
Cindy Kerr, Pennsylvania, USA
"Thank you, Margo and Arnie, for yet another fantastic experience. As in my two prior workshops with you, the instruction, locations and camaraderie were all exceptional.
"What a delight to be able to seek my own vision amongst such talented, creative, and insightful people as seem to find their way to your adventures! I learned a tremendous amount from you both, as well as from the daily group critiques, and was fascinated by what others produced in the same location.
Somehow, you also made 4:20AM wake-up calls seem natural.
"BTW, I am thoroughly entertained that the legend of Squirrel Nutkin continues to grow. Looking forward to many more adventures with you next year!
"
Lauren "Squirrel Nutkin" Golden, New York, USA
"Both Jan and I really enjoyed the workshop and appreciate you letting her tag along. Although I am no way an expert in Photo Workshops, I really enjoyed and appreciated the way you and Arne divided the day. I feel it gave me the complete picture of making good photographs.
"Again, thank you for getting me to slow down and enjoy photography.
"
Brad Moore, Indiana, USA
"Thank you, Margo, for the synopsis of everything that we learned and need to keep in mind. (It's that "keeping in mind" thing that I have trouble with.) I had just been thinking that I should write down some notes when your email arrived.
"And thank you again, Margo and Arnie, for putting together a terrific workshop. I have taken three other workshops, and yours is the only one that featured not only excellent photography instruction and critiques but also in-depth software instruction.
"It was terrific getting to work/play with all of you. I think ours was a particularly congenial group, and I hope we meet again. I for one am intending to take more BCPA workshops!.
"
And later ...
"I am glad you guys are getting two weeks of down time. You certainly deserve it! I couldn't believe how you kept going going going, especially you, Margo, when people were clamoring for your software expertise through the whole mid-day sessions.
"
Linda Behar, Massachusetts, USA
And from one of our participant guests...
"Hello Margo and Arnie,
"I would like to thank you both again for making a "tag-along" feel so welcome and included. Right from the first few moments in the livingroom, I felt a part of the group. I think I have told you both that photograpy has to date not been one of my favourite art mediums .. .but after a week of watching, listening and learning, I have a much greater apprecitation for all that MAKES (not TAKES) a good photo, and I could see myself exploring this medium in the future.
"However, for the moment I am simply going to bask in the glow of the beautiful scenery, the scent of the sea air, the taste of seafood, and the memory of the wonderful conversations I was able to have this past week with some very bright, interesting, lovely people.
"I feel that I have made good friends in a few short days, and I look forward to being able to stay in touch.!
"
Julie Weeks, Ontario, CANADA
"What a great workshop! It was a real pleasure getting to know all of you and seeing the great work that was done. After we bid farewell to our new friends, Sue and I drove to Mount Desert Island, pitched our tent and slept for ten hours ... It was a great two weeks and I hope that our paths cross again in the near future.
"The following is in response to something Margo was insistent that I do [Dave was shooting almost all horizontals, so I challenged him to do verticals]:

"They say the third time is the charm and that certainly held true for me at your workshop in New Harbor, Maine. This is the third workshop you've given that I've attended, and each one has been better than the last.
"You chose beautiful and interesting places for us to photograph on the lovely Pemaquid Peninsula and were always there for me with suggestions for pictures and with help when I had technical troubles or questions. I learned new techniques for processing my photos on the computer and absorbed a lot from the constructive critiques I received.
"The days were long and the labor great, but it was a wonderful experience. I got many good photos and learned how to take even better ones.
" Thanks for a wonderful workshop.
"
Alice Langholz, New York, USA
And one from one of our participant spouses...
"This is just a note to thank you for the warm welcome you gave me and the other spouses and friends of the participants in your [Summertime on the Maine Coast] workshop. As you know, this is the third time I've accompanied Alice on one of your workshops and, for me, each experience has been better than the last.
"You made me feel like part of the group even when you were busy with those "officially" taking pictures on photo shoots. We non-participants were kept apprised of times, destinations and plans for meals, allowing us to maximize our enjoyment of the beautiful Pemaquid Peninsula.
"Thanks again for helping to make my time at your workshop so enjoyable.
"
Ed Langholz, New York, USA
"Thank you for a fun, exhausting, education-enriched five days! I had no idea when I registered for this class how long the days would be and how much time you and Arnie would dedicate to the teaching process, both in the field and in the classroom. I learned a ton and enjoyed the friendships I made. I will never forget the laughs or all of the fond memories!
"Thank you both - I hope to join you again!
"
Nikki Richman, Maine, USA
"If you have not been on one of Margo's trips – do yourself a favor and go!
"Prepare yourself for a great time immersing yourself into your favorite subject – photography and beautiful scenery! Having fun people with you does not hurt either.
"It's been months now since I've been, and when I review my images taken on that trip I know that they are the best I have made so far. I'm now planning a 2nd trip with Margo.
" In fact, Diane and some of her friends are signed up for the 2011 Savannah & Her Lowcountry workshop.
Diana Powell, Tennessee, USA
"I obviously can't thank you and Arnie enough for all your generosity ... you guys were amazing! Considering I was only there for a week, I learned a phenomenal amount, and I have so many wonderful memories to go with it! I've been doing my best to go out and shoot when I'm not at work (even though Vermont isn't quite as exciting as Italy), and I think I've had some successes. I couldn't have asked for a better graduation present or better people to spend it with. I loved meeting everyone else in the workshop--what a fun group of people!
"Jon had an incredible time as well (I've never seen him so relaxed!), and he really appreciated your willingness to let him tag along and see so much of Sicily.
"Thanks again for everything! It was such a wonderful experience, and I hope I have the opportunity to do something that awesome with you guys again!
"
Katy Towers, Vermont, USA
"Arnie and Margo,
"Great to watch the Blog and hear of your exploits. I do miss our time together. I feel like I really grew as a photographer those few days. Abilities and confidence. Now I must find a way to do one of the longer trips, but bring my wife along. Hope all is well. Look forward to many more meetings with you.
"
And a little while later...
"What a great time! The friendship time, the camera time, the “family”time . . . All was great.
"The direction and instruction by Arnie and Margo was tremendous. At times it was a little nudge to get you to possibly re-direct your camera or mental vision. Other times, it was a little more of a push (that Margo!). No matter which way, you were always treated with respect and professionalism. Statementsssuch as, ‘Remember what drew you to the scene and make sure that is your only subject,’ as Margo would look through your view finder or Arnie and his mantra, ‘Simplify and isolate.’ Our favorte was Margo and her ‘ahem." Not sure how to spell it, can’t even make the sound, but I am sure everybody who takes a Barefoot Contessa workshop has heard it from the corners of the shoot. Someone is doing something ‘wrong’. I know our group had great fun with that one.
"Again, the whole workshop was just fun! Friendships, Photo ops, 'Family' time. Yes, 'family' time. In just a short period of time, our group had become a close 'family.' Laughing together, laughing at each other, supporting each other, enjoying meals together, sharing past history and stories. It was just like being together with family, a family of photography nuts, but a family. I plan on doing more workshops with these great photographers and people.
"Thanks, Margo and Arnie.
"
And more recently...
"I think I have become a one-person ad man for you in our area and with my online friends at Betterphoto. Haven't won any prizes/awards, but of the photos that I have loaded up on Betterphoto (since the workshop) 11 out of 16 have been give an "Editor's Pick". (
http://www.betterphoto.com/Premium/Default.aspx?id=150961&mp=V2) Had a good Roanoke Sidewalk Art Show and Sale. Placed three photos in the Bath County Art Show (they gave us flyers while at workshop).
"Again, getting tons of compliments about how my work has gone to the next level. Thanks for the confidence in my abilities. You and Arnie's tutelage and confidence in me open my vision. I have always been confident in my abilities as a dentist. That was sometimes lacking as a photographer, especially in the context of being a 'professional photographer.' No, I don't do it as vocation, but as Arnie commented, 'You are a professional photographer'. Many thanks to my mentors and friends, Arnie and Margo. Looking forward to doing another workshop with you soon. Yes, I still hear that little 'ahem' in my head when I do something 'wrong' or don't take time to take that small step to the left or tilt my camera in an odd way to get a photo. Lois looks at me rather oddly, when I quietly make a comment about Margo gently scolding me! LOL. Have a great rest of the summer.
John Singleton, Virginia, USA
"Hey, what a GREAT time! This was our third European workshop, and we never seem to get tired of them! New people, new places, and learning all the time! The wine never seems to be bad, either.
"The first time that I saw what the others in the group were shooting, I knew that I was going to have to step up my game. I'd need to stop and look a little harder and not just shoot the usual snapshots that I tend to do. I'm afraid that I'm just a vacation photographer at heart, but Margo and Arnie ask the questions and make the suggestions that get you to see more in the image than what I'm used to looking for. Finding the essence of the photo, by Margo saying, 'Remember what drew you to the image,' and Arnie repeating the mantra, 'Simplify and isolate.'
"I figure that about three or four more workshops and I'll begin to get it.
"Again, it's just plain fun, traveling, meeting people, eating well, and learning photography all at the same time! What more could you ask for!
"
Dave Enochs, North Carolina, USA
"Margo & Arnie,
"I wanted to drop you a note of thanks for all I learned while on your Springtime in the Outer Banks workshop. I returned home last week from a solo trip to Maine with the intent to do photography, since I had seen a lot of yours and members photos from the area that I was very impressed with.
"As I took my stance for that perfect shot I heard you, Margo, in my head with that un-un (sorry I don't even know how to spell that unusual sound you were always making) and remembered you saying to search the frame. And the information I learned from you Arnie on the Kelvin Scale helped when that sunset just didn't happened and I had the time to play around and get a decent shot from nothing.
"And yes, I learned to appreciate those early mornings and late nights when, because of Maine's ridiculously early sunrises, I had to get up at some dreadful hour to drive 1 1/2 hours to Port Clyde Lighthouse to try and catch it. As I watched the sunrise off to the side I continued shooting that glow that we were always trying to catch. And yes I was very happy with the results I got.
" Same thing when on a rainy, overcast day, I returned to Portland Head Light for a sunset that I never thought would happen. I waited with another photographer for 2 hours as the sky began to glow and a fantastic sunset occurred. It wasn't where I wanted it, but as I learned for your workshop, I walked in all directions, shot from all sides, and remembered to always look over my shoulder, because even though the sunset wasn't there where I needed it, the beautiful glowing sky was.
"So kudos to you both for those voices that stay in my head, for this was one of the most satisfying photo shoots I ever had.
"
Dolores Rebovich, Pennsylvania, USA
"thank you so much, couldn't have been better in so many ways - sights, sharing, learning, fun....." (except for more - even longer days and longer nights for sleep)
"
Joanie Alexander, North Carolina, USA
"Thank you. I got here safely. Glad I left when I did. It was a three hour drive and I met a deer on the way home. Scared me wide awake!
"Thanks again for the wonderful time and all the teachings. I will do my best to take it as a step to improve further.
"
Kristin Woodman, New Hampshire, USA
"Dear Arnie and Margo,
"Thanks for a great workshop. It definitely was a workshop with more laughs per image and more good images than any workshop I have ever taken. I am going to recommend it to all my photo friends.
"Sunday after I left the workshop, I did some shooting on the way to Staunton, Then crashed for about 2 hours. Got up and had dinner. Then went back to sleep for another 10 hours. That's right, 12 hours of sleep - playing catchup after early to rise and late to bed in pursuit of learning and the perfect image.
"
Stan Strauss, New York, USA
"Arnie and Margo - Nice Show - Thanks.
"
Walt Frankhauser, Virginia, USA
"Again my appreciation for all your help, as well as good humor in putting up with such a high-energy group. Nothing but kudos from everyone I talked to about the week.
"
David Kay, Virginia, USA
"I learned a lot at the Barefoot Contessa photo workshop in Savannah and found both Margo's and Arnie's critiques to be spot on. They are enthusiastic, passionate, and generous with their time. One-on-one guidance in the field, as well as during image editing sessions, really enabled me to focus on my weak spots and remind me of some basics that I sometimes get sloppy and forget (!).
"I hope to join them again on another photo adventure in the not-too-distant-future.
"
Cheryl Richer, New York, USA
"Margo and Arnie,
"Thank you for the wonderful class. I learned a great deal, and I feel that I've grown as a photographer...
"I would also like to say I really enjoyed meeting everyone in the class and hope that we can keep in contact in the future. I would love to see some of the photos that you have created. I'm on ...
"Take care,
"
Erinn Robinette, Colorado, USA
"To all,
"Thanks, Arnie and Margo, for a great experience and making learning so much fun! My excitement and enthusiasm have been re-ignited!!! Thanks to all of my colleagues for your insights, fun and fellowship.
" Best,
""
Tony "anh anh" Schiano,
North Carolina, USA
"I just wanted to say thanks for all the help and instructions you gave while I was on the Outer Banks Workshop, along with all the fun I had and the knowledge I gained. Hopefully I'll see you again on another of your workshops!
"
Dolores Rebovich,
Pennsylvania, USA
"Thanks go to you and Arnie. It was a great session. I learned a lot, had a great time, and met some very nice people.
"OK, no more 8X10s!
"
Jack Welch, Massachusetts, USA
"Participating in the May 2010 “Outer Banks’ workshop made me realize that – even though I’m extremely familiar with digital photography, camera operations, composition, lighting, etc. - I had not been putting much effort into my photography.
"Thank you, Margo, for ‘forcing’ me to apply my theoretical knowledge and translate it into better images! You helped me a lot!
"
Inge Weidmann, California, USA
"Arnie and Margo,
"Hello from beautiful Puget Sound! I just wanted to thank you for a great week in Savannah. I appreciated both of your teaching styles, sense of humor, patience, and the effort you made to spend time daily with each of us.
"I have been to several other workshops, and can say I came away with more practical tips and techniques with BCPA. There are a number of suggestions you made that pop into my head (with the appropriate voice) while I am shooting, especially how to properly cradle my long lens. Also, thank you for the SC road map atlas and tips for around Charleston. Beautiful area that we hope to return to someday.
"I look forward to joining you guys at a future location for more photographic harassment from two great instructors!
"
...and later ...
"Margo, I also wanted to thank you for demonstrating how to walk back with my hands to get myself back into a standing position after being down on my knees while shooting — definitely one of the better photography tips I have ever been given!!! My knees thank you, also!
"
Jim & Sharon Moore, Washington, USA
"Margo and Arnie,
"I just want you to know several things. First of all, the accommodations you selected were superb. I can't believe the price we paid for what we received ... More importantly, the workshop was great.
"I know I don't show it when each of you are giving me suggestions and pointers in the field, but I do try to absorb what you each are imparting. My absorption rate may be low, but some of what you have given me is sticking. You both have a unique vision. I'll never come close to that but at least I've seen the mountain top --and I'm having fun looking at it!
"
Jack Tierney, Maryland, USA
[Writing to one of our alumni who recommended us...]
"Margo and Arnie are great to work with, and it was a fun workshop. The days were long but full, and I started to get results that I can see in my photos as well as when I am setting up to make a photo. They both worked with me, as well as the others, and I know I have started looking at photos and situations differently.
"It was a great learning experience, and I enjoyed working with them and chatting with them. I still take an occasional vacation album photo, but I am striving to make even those better. Yes, I still hear over my shoulder either Margo or Arnie commenting about my composition when I am setting up, i.e. "Is that bright light supposed to be in the photo?" or "You might try a different angle," or "Look for the potential hazards " or "Simplify!"
"Thanks again!
"
Dave Sutherland, California, USA
"I enjoyed and appreciated the workshop. You made a greater effort than in any others I have attended to really give meaningful instruction and assistance...
"Keep me on your mailing list as I hope to be with you again one day. After years of taking pictures, I am at last beginning to be more atuned to the light!!!
"
A Y Brown, North Carolina, USA
"Thanks again for making our workshop so wonderful. The group was very interesting, and I hope that a few of us can join you again in the future.
"In terms of results, I believe that I created some of the best pictures ever — something I have never said after any other workshop. Of course, the setting was perfect, and I like your approach to photography in general. You know that I mean this, as you will have me on three more outings.
"Also, I like the booklet that you have prepared. You and Arnie did a great job and deserve a good rest. I will look to see what you have to say on your blog.
"
George Dalsheimer, The Caymans
"The Belize trip is my third adventure with
Margo and Arnie. It won’t be my last. In fact, Kathy and I will be back
for the Yosemite workshop in December.
"I have been on other photography field
workshops, but have never repeated with any other provider. I have been
to New England, Moab and now Belize and although the locations have been
very different, the one constant is the commitment of Arnie and Margo to
advancing the skills of the participants and in creating a fun and friendly
experience. Besides being exceptional photographers, they are also exceptional
people.
"In these tough economic times, there is no better value for someone
interested in advancing their photographic skills, regardless of ability.
My only regret is that I didn’t meet these two until 2007.
"
Dave
Robertson, California, USA
"I joined the trip to Belize as a tag-along
with a point-and-shoot and a desire to experience a new place. I was totally
unprepared for the connection we made with the group, the people of Belize,
and the countryside in just over a week.
"The set-up in an eco-lodge in the jungle put us into a wild, new world with
howler-monkey wake-up calls at 4:30 a.m., but it was access to the real lives
of Mayan people that was even more unusual. Uncomfortable with the thought of
paparazzi snapping the locals, I was pleased with the arrangements to visit people
in their thatched homes, talk with them about their lives, and participate in
activities such as chocolate making. Cameras clicked, but so did people.
"The waterfalls and ruins were stunning – and I found travel with laggard photographers
means I see everything a little more closely, too.
"Thanks to Margo and Arnie for setting a tone
of earnest learning and good humor – and thanks to Charlotte [wife of another
participant] for being an accomplice to play when others turned to 'chimping.'
"
"Spousal Unit" Kathy
Robertson, California, USA
"My experience in Belize far exceeded my
expectations for a workshop in such a beautiful country. The photographic
opportunities were fantastic, and the instructional insight to taking photographs
by you and Arnie was invaluable to me as a novice. It was also very interested
to learn about the Mayan people, their culture, and the villages they live
in, and to be able to photograph them in their way of life. The Mayan people
and their children were just delightful.
"I want to thank you and Arnie for all the
advice and the extra time you spent with me both in the field and during the
computer sessions. I have learned a lot about the features and settings on my
camera and appreciate your patience in trying to teach me a more stable way to
hold my camera.
"The accommodations at the Lodge
were unique, and the food was just outstanding. It was my second workshop with
BCPA, and I am looking forward to my third!
"
John Ronayne, Massachusetts, USA
"Thank you for a wonderful workshop in
Belize. It was fun and exciting to be part of the inaugural workshop in such
a beautiful area. The title and promotional materials really did not do justice
to the fantastic experiences we enjoyed meeting the wonderful people of Southern
Belize. We certainly came away feeling we had been part of the real culture
of the area.
"The Lodge exceeded all expectations
— great accommodations, wonderful food, and delightful people. However,
the real heart of the workshop was the fantastic instruction that both
of you provided.
"The collaborative, hands-on format
allowed each of us to learn and progress at our own rate. As I was
the most novice in the class, you were always patient and encouraging,
yet you pushed me to grow, sometimes beyond my comfort level.
"This will
not be
my last workshop with BCPA!
"
Sandy Patton, Colorado,
USA
"Canyon de Chelly was a fantastic trip.
Margo, you and Arnie are such excellent hosts, allowing me to participate in
your workshops.
Your classes are so creative and educational. I have also learned a few things
about taking pictures.
I really enjoyed meeting everyone and seeing the beautiful canyons.
"The Indian guides were very knowledgeable,
extremely helpful to everyone, and very entertaining.
"I am so looking forward to the New England class, the photography, the scenery
and especially seeing everyone again.
"
"Spousal Unit" Alumna
Sally Lovers,

"I'm very pleased with my photos from New
England. I
made one of those photo books, and when people see the pictures their first comment
is, 'Did you do these pictures? REALLY?'
"The trip was great fun....Looking forward to Moab.
"
Jean Thomas, Florida,
USA
"I wanted to let you know what a great time
I had in New England with you! Growing up in Northern Maine, I always enjoyed
the fall colors and really looked forward to being back up north for a visit.
As much as I love New England and the fall colors, the subject was not something
I would naturally gravitate to as a photographer, though. My thinking was, that
if TBC can help me get good images of something that didn't really light a spark,
I would be making true advances in my skills. Thanks for an amazing trip and
I look forward to more of your photo adventures.
"Turns out two things happened:
I really feel like I did make good progress on my skills; and you also
lit a big spark. I guess there is a reason why you hold your workshops
where you do; the richness of opportunity was really something. Also,
Long Lo Lodge and Canaan Street Lake were icing on top.
"Over the weekend
I found out that the picture you have in the student
gallery of the leaves and pine needles floating
in the lake won me a first place in my first photo
contest. I can now say I have won every contest
I have entered :). A local chain of camera stores
was holding a contest for what says fall so I had
to give it a try — needless to say, I am very pleased
with the results.
"Thanks for
an amazing trip and I look forward to more of
your photo adventures.
"
Jeff
Chase, Virginia, USA
"The web
site looks great!! I love all the new student
gallery photos. After seeing all the beautiful
photos, there are so many other workshops that
I want to come on!
"Once again I want to thank you for
a wonderful experience My second workshop with you guys was just as
amazing as the first! I can't believe all the new things that I've learned
and the different images that I shot. I'm still looking at my photographs
from the Outer Banks and finding new ones that I love. Now when I go
to shoot, I hear both of your voices, and I smile. Miss you both.
"
Melanie Shalam, New
York, USA
"You really have been busy with upating your
webste, and I have enjoyed viewing all of the new pages! I truly enjoyed the
workshop, as I always get more than I bargained for! You and Arnie are purely
delightful....your knowledge, patience and enthusiam are inspiring.
"
Sherrie Winarski, Georgia,
USA
"I had some high-school and college experience
with photography, but let it fade away over the years as life got a little crazy.
Once I decided to get back into it, I thought that combining my passion for travel
+ photography = the best time ever! A photography workshop at some cool destination
seemed like the most logical choice, so I turned to my friend and go-to girl
at PDN for some guidance. She suggested a few names, and after some online research,
I thought that BCPA looked like the place that could potentially offer everything
that I was looking for: #1 Professional expertise with vetted pro’s, #2 small
group size, and #3 (most importantly) looked like they had fun! …oh, yeah, and
#4, would work with a total novice like me!
"Long story short, after torturing
my friends month-after-month with unrealistic expectations of this new
adventure, the 1st day finally arrived. The New England Fall Foliage!
I don’t want to bore you with too many details, but Margo & Arnie
helped me streamline my eye for composition, learn about my aperture
and shutter speed, and capture the light in a whole new way.
"Every muscle in my body ached
from hauling our gear around in the pouring rain and crouching in
some crazy position to JUST GET IT RIGHT! I loved being with other
like-minded photographers, passionate about the same thing, and each
person composing their art more individually than the next. As I
drove away on the last day, I missed them already. My takeaway: the
stills from each location (each more awesome than the next!), memories
of laughter and fun times, and the VAST knowledge instilled from
Arnie and Margo. My expectations were fully realized! It was full-on,
long days with a little bit of a roller-coaster ride along the way,
but I felt that I walked away with some of the best shots that I’d
taken in my life, and more importantly — passion renewed!
"Thank you Margo & Arnie!!!
I can’t wait to go on another BCPA adventure!
"
DeAnne Warner, New
York, USA
"Thank you so much for helping my dad and
me create a very happy memory. Despite his strong self-criticism and seemingly
serious demeanor, he actually had a wonderful time and is very pumped up about
the experience. I of course loved it (but you knew that). It was a very special
week for both of us. You and Arnie are a real pleasure to be around, and I felt
completely comfortable putting myself in your hands. I'm definitely a better
photographer for the experience. I'm very hopeful that we'll be able to attend
one of your workshops in 2010 — I can't think of a better tradition for us to
start.
"
Brian Stifel, Georgia,
USA
"Once again, thank you for the incredible
experience we shared in the Lighthouses of the Outer Banks workshop. The terrific
locations, instruction, and camaraderie of your workshops has to be very hard
to beat anywhere. I could repeat my comments made a few months ago (Cascades
and Wildflowers of Virginia), but the bottom line is simply you are two of the
nicest and caring people we have met. What you bring to the workshop on a personal
and professional level is the true value of this experience. I would recommend
to anyone looking to meet and work with great people who share their passion
for photography to sign up now for a workshop. There is no way you cannot learn
in this environment, and you will have a most wonderful time doing it!
"Chris and I wil be back!
"
Gary Olejniczak, Wisconsin,
USA
"Thank you for a most enjoyable workshop.
For me it was both a humbling and enjoyable learning experience — humbling because
I realized how conventional most of the pictures I brought with me were and how
average my skills were, and enjoyable because I could sense my perception of
what constituted good photography expanding as the days progressed...
"Although we went to each venue as
a group, we were really individual souls examining the world around
us each from our own unique universe. I regret that we had to leave
before the show and tell because I know it was enjoyable and a good
learning experience. After seeing some of the stunning shots other people
made, I felt that I was the least experienced photographer in the group
and had much to learn.
"Margo, you challenged me to use
the x, y and z axes and to move myself and the camera rather than the
zoom lens to control the elements and frame the shot. Arnie, your gentle
low-key suggestions about exposure values and aperture control stimulated
me to think about the effects of changing the mood of a scene to make
it more effective before moving on, and most importantly reminded me
to slow down and smell the roses. I think you guys make a great team
because your different styles complement each other.
"I hope to put what you taught me
to good use. My goal is to get to the point where I use photoshop to
correct for the limitations of the camera and lens rather relying on
the program to correct the limitations of the photographer.
" I hope to see you at another workshop
next year.
"
Sy Stifel, Florida,
USA
"I wanted to thank you and Arnie for a great
workshop. It was a tremendous learning experience that was enhanced by spending
time with you guys!
"
Cam Garner, California,
USA
"Thank you both so much for providing me with
such a wonderful opportunity to photograph and to learn. You gave me exactly
what I wanted and needed — to be pushed, to make the sort of images that are
compelling, interesting, and are truly me. You helped to take me to another level
of photography that I know will stay with me.
"As I told you when we said, 'Good
bye,' I will continue to hear your voices whenever I am shooting. Nevertheless,
I know that my work will still be unique to me. I feel much more able
to express what I see and feel with my camera. Even though I learned
much more about technical issues, what I learned most is how to produce
images that comes from the heart.
"Yesterday, after the workshop,
I went back to the harbor to shoot some more. Again, I heard
you telling me to look around, pre-visualize, become aware
of what might ruin the image and what will make it a better
image, look at all four sides of the image that I see in my
viewfinder, and understand what caught my eye and then capture
that when I click the shutter. Of course, there is much more.
Just as in New England two years ago, this workshop also fulfilled
and surpassed all of my expectations.
"Take
care, and thank you again.
"
Arnie Berkman, Michigan,
USA
"The Fall Foliage trip for 2009 is over, and
I'm back and emerged in my business. As I started to process some of the photos
that were taken on this trip, I became aware of the real value that I had received.
"Throughout the 3 photo adventures with you
guys, there was a great diversity of different subjects to photograph. (Literally,
hundreds during the 3 trips). Each had its own challenges.
"What makes me enjoy these trips is the help
that one or both of you give to me in how to approach the situation that confronts
me. Often, there is a suggestion to approach the challenge from a different perspective
from my original one. Frequently, I use my approach along with the one from you
all. This allows me to compare and evaluate each, giving me a chance to study
and determine which best suits my ideas of photography.
"The bottom line is that I now have a collection
of over a 1,000 photos from various places covering various subjects, many of
which I can show with confidence because of the advice from both of you.
"
Tony Miller, New Jersey,
USA
"I want to thank you both very much for the
time and talent you shared with me at this workshop. I learned more in one afternoon
with you than on my last workshop. The instructors there were more concerned
with getting their own shots and showing us their work, than trying to get us
to find our own vision and improve our own photography. I am a convert!
"I have been slammed with work since I got
back. 12 hour days. When I was with the group last week, I did not hate anyone
or anything, even when I was not feeling well, and I did not use a bad word all
week. Now I hate people again and have used many bad words………… ;-)
"I’m already thinking about 2010 – Maine or
Sicily – or both!
"
Mary Brunco,
Massachusetts, USA
"I returned home yesterday, Tuesday, and awoke
to a blanket of snow!!! Back to work today, just got home....I had a great time
and I'm so excited about some of my pictures. Yes I will send some but won't
have any time to work on them until this next week since I headed right back
to work...
"I'm hoping to sign up for Moab; it's at the
top of the bucket list....
"Thanks for all our help and suggestions.
"
Jean Thomas,
Florida, USA
"I wanted to say that I had a fabulous time
at the Fall Foliage Workshop. As a beginner, I came in very nervous and a bit
intimidated. Looking around, I realized that everyone had powerful cameras .
. . multiple lenses . . . filters . . . and I had my little compact Canon G10.
And I'll never forget how you both laughed with approval when you saw my heavy
duty tripod with my little camera.
"But by the end of the week, I proudly carried
my heavy duty tripod and Canon G10 to our photo shoots, and my insecurities completely
changed. While I may not be able to do everything they can do, I can certainly
produce something satisfying to me. And that's what it's all about. Making pictures
that make me happy.
"And I was very happy when I left, although
very tired. I had a great time learning about making pictures and getting to
know you both. The workshop was professional but in a friendly-family sort of
way. It's amazing to me that you can put twelve people together for five long
days and have so many new friendships develop.
" I hope to see both of you and my fellow "photographers" at
another workshop soon.
"
Anne Pace,
Maryland, USA
"I had a lot of fun on the workshop but regret
not being there to share the images. I promise not to let this happen again.
As far as the images go, it is hard to choose which ones to send. How would you
like me to send them? The only way I can actually send any photos is with gmail
and Picasa. Any other method just will not work on my computer. This has been
going on for five years so it is not about to change now.
"I just wanted to let you know that I met
a physician on the plane. He was hugging a Nikon D300 like it was his baby. I
started asking him about his photography and learned that he is a novice. He
is from Panama but is living in New Hampshire. He was very interested in learning
about your workshops so I gave him your name and showed him some of the photos
on my computer. Of course, I heard, "They look just like paintings!" For
someone who is new to photography, this is a great compliment, so I did not let
it get under my skin. He was such a nice man and I hope he talks to you and signs
up for a workshop.
"
and later...
"I have been "tweaking" and found
some shots that I wanted to share. I loved this workshop! In fact, this has fulfilled
a life-long dream of mine. I was supposed to be in New England on 9-11-2001 but
could not go. As we all know, it was NOT the time to be there.
"I just cannot say enough about how wonderful
this workshop was.
"
Harriet Feagin, Texas,
USA
"I'm exhausted. So why am I now searching
your site for the next workshop? That's because I LOVED IT! This experience
was so much fun. I enjoyed everything, and the foliage colors were more spectacular
then I expected. Did you arrange that, too? Getting up close and personal with
nature in a beautiful location is an excellent way to sightsee, bond with my
camera, and grow as a photographer.
"I'm a little banged up. My hands are bruised
and cut up from adjusting my tripod, and I have braces on both knees today. Ibuprofen
rocks!
"Thanks and
see you again soon! Maine and Virginia workshops look appealing for the next
go. I'm sure I'll get [sister] Anne to come, too, as she's also got the bug,
I think.
"P.S. Unbeknownst to me, I'm apparently drawn
towards the mysteries of the deep forest along water. I love the deep colors
and contrast, and I love that I discovered that!
"
"I was thinking how I thoroughly enjoyed discussing
the images during review day on Sunday and seeing everyone's work.
"
Pat Gardner,
Virignia, USA
"Thank you for a very informative four days.
I apologize greatly for leaving early. I really did not want to go, as I was
learning so much from the review of everyone's work and would have loved to have
had time for critique of mine. However, [husband] Bill informed me that he had
spent those days traveling around the area and lower part of the state hunting
down places where I might make more pictures.
"We went up into the mine. I really was not
into the rock, when I heard a little voice that said, 'Look for patterns, and
textures; stop and look at it from different angles.' I actually got some really
great shots!
"When I get home I will check my schedule
for the next workshop. I will also look over my old pics and rejudge them
with more educated eyes.
"Thanks again!
"
"The trip is going fine. I feel like I can
finally discriminate on the pictures I actually take. I made a few (OK several
) sunrise pictures. I only applied "Margo's Tweaks." I am not going
to do any further work on them until I get home and put them on larger my computer
screen.
"I have been raving about the help I recieved
and the way that I have grown as a photographer. Tell Arnie I have been "waiting
for the light" but so far not much change in this area. Is it OK if I suggest
your workshop to my classmates when I start that "night photography course" in
Edmonton?
"Thank you again!
"
Marg Wood, Alberta,
CANADA
"What a fantastic workshop! I really learned
a great deal from you both as well as from the other participants. You made it
fun while also "pushing" me to achieve results I never considered
possible. Only native New Englanders, such as yourself, could have found these
remote areas with the most gorgeous scenery that any photographer could only
dream about!
"I'll look forward to my fourth workshop with
you next year.
"
Harry Goodman,
Pennsylvania, USA
"I want to thank you so much for my very first
photography workshop! Under the extreme conditions of getting up so early, I
have to say I've never been so tired, so proud, and so excited about a new hobby!
I try to show off my photos to anyone who stands remotely close to my monitor!
Thank you so much, I can't wait to sign up for another workshop.
"I so enjoyed meeting y'all, from
the very first morning, starting off with a hug from you Margo — your
psychological skills were "tac" sharp — I mean-who can bitch
and moan after a surprising mood stabilizer smile and a hug?!!! You're
the best!
"Arnie, thanks for finding
me at times (you too, Margo) when I wondered off to be by myself.
To tell y'all the truth, I had no idea where we were going.
I didn't want to have a preconceived idea as to what I was
supposed to shoot, so I didn't look at brochures, articles,
or anything else. I'm still not sure where we were, : )
"I look forward
to my next workshop with y'all. Margo and Arnie,
I hope you are well, you guys are great. I felt
very comfortable and at ease, even with my novice
skill ability.
"
Nancy Steele, Georgia,
USA
"Margo and Arnie have figured out the secret
to adult learning — playing around like you're a kid! I learned a surprising
number of different approaches to composition and lighting by being encouraged
to try out some new ideas in shooting locations that seemed like really big sandboxes.
My landscape 'thinking' has jumped a level as evidenced by the WOW!s and the
WHOA!s I am getting on prints from the Arches, Canyonlands & Moab workshop.
I had a blast to boot! Well done, 'kids'!
"
Goodloe Suttler, North
Carolina, USA
"I hope you are getting close to being home
for a bit. I wanted to say thanks for your patience and encouragement. The opportunity
to learn so much from true professionals was delightful. I truly believe I can
make better pictures and see my vision now.
"I am talking with several of my friends about
a trip next year ... just not sure which one ... but I can't wait to make photos
(and I promise to bring my tripod) with y'all again.
"
Nicole Robinson,
North Carolina, USA
"It was great fun seeing you both again, and
I really enjoyed the group experience. You have such a gift for allowing people
to have creative and personal space, and yet participate in a group. As I have
said repeatedly to friends and family upon my return, 'I have found my people!'
"
Lauren "Squirrel
Nutkin" Golden, New York, USA
"Thanks for an inspiring workshop. I'm looking
forward to Moab.
"
Michelle Turner,
New York, USA
"Just a quick note to tell you how VERY MUCH
I enjoyed meeting you both this past week. Dave and I had a wonderful time in
Chinle.
"Personally I had
no clue what
to expect (I hadn’t really seen your website or emails) and must admit that
the entire experience
far exceeded my expectations, and I just had
a blast with everyone! Thank you for making me feel so welcome.
"Again, thank you for a really terrific
experience!
"
"Spousal Unit" Lisa
Lun zer, California, USA
"Since coming home from the workshop in Maine,
I have been having trouble putting into words how much I have enjoyed this adventure.
Words simply cannot begin to describe how much I fun I had during this experience.
"First let me say that you are both the warmest
and kindest. You made me feel comfortable and right at home the minute I arrived.
The warm and caring way in which you both approached this whole learning experience
was incredible. I think it is because of the way you are that all the people
in the group were able to mesh into one unit very quickly. We laughed and had
a great time, while at the same time really learning a lot of material. Getting
up early really didn't feel like a hardship, because I couldn't wait to go and
see what you were bringing to the day.
"I can't get over all the information that
was absorbed in such a short time, but your hands-on approach really cements
the ideas you try to teach.
"I must say that I am really going through
withdrawal and will definitely be on another adventure as soon as my schedule
allows.
"Meanwhile, I miss you guys!
"
Erica Sarway,
New York, USA
"I just came back from the workshop, Summertime
on the Maine Coast, and it was fabulous. It is my second workshop with you and
like the first one, you provided excellent guiding in understanding what makes
the difference between a good and a great photograph of the subject that attracted
my eyes. I will be ever grateful for your patience and your generosity.
"The reason that I went back and did a second
workshop with you has nothing to do with the quality of the information provided,
the excellent choices for shooting locations, or the fact that you provide one-on-one
assistance during the whole process from taking the picture, the imaging process,
to the final editing. The real reason is the atmosphere that you create during
the four days the group spent together. From the beginning to the end of the
workshop, all the participants are immersed in a bubble full of passion for the
art of photography.
"I have just one warning, after four days
of picture taking from sunrise to sunset, making great new friends, pure joy
and happiness, the trip to go back home can provide a profound depressive state.
The only cure for this type of depression is to go back and do an other workshop
with you in the future.
"Cheers til we meet again!
"
Alain Roy, Québec,
CANADA
"I knew I loved photography, but it was not
until I took your course did I realize how much. I want to thank you so much
for all your efforts. I had a blast and learned an incredible amount ( I just
hope I can retain it). You guys are really terrific people, and your love for
your work is infectious (of course, I had to use a medical term). I will definitely
be taking another course with you ( if you allow me).
"I will never forget the fun, the
laughs, and the patience you brought to the course. I will also never
forget the fact you consider food a very low priority :) (but you did
give us the opportunity to go out and get food). I promise to
get a new ball head, look through the lens, not as a colonoscopist,
but as I frame the pic that I am "making."
I'll double loop my strap and will always "CELEBRATE " that
which I am trying to express...
"Remember, I take pics where the "sun
never shines" and where "no man has ever set eyes before." Lighting
is crucial in my profession, but we cant wait for 30 minutes before
sunrise!!!
" Thank you again for your advice,
patience, planning, and friendship... See you again, I promise.
"
Bruce Salzberg, Georgia,
USA
"I can’t thank you enough for making this
workshop as fun as it was enlightening. There were days where my cheeks hurt
from cracking up. I also can’t stress enough how our time spent in New Harbor
has brought me back to how I used to approach “making” photos with film. You’ve
reawakened senses long forgotten and the reasons that I fell in love with photography
in the first place. I’ve already scouted a few areas along the South Shore and
as you promised, I’m seeing things for the first time in places I’ve photographed
for years. Again - I can’t thank you enough.
"
Bill Burke, Massachusetts,
USA
"I just returned from the Acadia National Park
workshop. I am not sure what was better, the photography and instruction or the
humor and camaraderie. It is hard to eat and belly-laugh at the same time!
"I had about an eight hour drive
home on Sunday which provided plenty of time to reflect on the workshop
experience and distill many thoughts down to the "meat," as
Arnie says. For me it came down to this.
" The advice, guidance and encouragement
you provided helped push the envelope of my creative comfort zone, thereby
enlarging that zone and as well as helping to remove the cobwebs from
my vision. When we are encouraged to look beyond what we immediately
see that attracts our eye photographically, that experience comes into
play the next time we go and shoot and enables us to take a wider view
of creative possibilities.
" I like to use analogies. This reminds
me of the physical joints in our bodies. When young they are flexible,
with a wide range of motion. As we age, that flexibility and range diminishes.
If an effort is made to stretch and extend that range through exercise,
it may pay off in improved use of that joint. So, following that thinking,
you are a fitness club for creative vision ;-).
"Thanks again for a great time. I
loved it.
"
Ross Attix, Pennsylvania,
USA
"Mary and I had a great time, and we enjoyed
meeting you and Arnie. We are looking at our schedule to see when we can fit
in another one of your workshops.
"
Steve L., Virginia,
USA
"Chris and I awoke early this morning prepared
to catch the wonder soft light and scenery you showed us. To our surprise it
was bright and sunny without a cloud in the sky. We packed up and headed home!!!!!
"Once again, thanks for the wonderful week
and memories. Chris and I had a terrific time. (Cheeks still hurt) We especially
liked the part where we got to know you a little on a personal level. That was
very nice. You are two wonderful people.
"
"My wife and I just returned from the Cascades
and Wildflowers of Virginia workshop. What an incredible experience for two retirement
photographers. Margo and Arnie do an exceptional job of scouting locations to
insure a well-motivated customer while they gently teach and enhance your photographic
skills. Each location was perfectly suited to teaching the day's lesson or technique.
Class sizes are designed to allow the instructors to provide the maximum one-on-one
personal attention to each student's needs. They have an uncanny eye for seeing
what the student needs, in both the field and the lab, and guiding that person
into creating the image they saw in their vision. We came away with a greatly
enhanced knowledge of working with light and how to effectively make the subject
of the image the "hero" it was intended to be.
"In addition to all of the above and
the countless other photography-related knowledge we were taught, we met
two of the best people one can ever meet. Margo and Arnie are truly skilled
and excellent instructors, photographers, and artists. However, they are
exceptional human beings as well. They bring their professional and personal
lives to the workshop in such a fashion that puts the student totally at
ease. Learning is so much easier when you are in such a frame of mind.
What is amazing is that their passion is not only photography but also
about life and the many people they meet.
"Great locations, expert knowledge,
and truly wonderful people. How could one better spend a week chasing Cascades
and Wildflowers in Virginia!
"
Gary Olejniczak, Wisconsin,
USA
"Thank you for a wonderful experience! You
guys are warm, friendly, funny, patient, and very knowledgeable in photography.
I learned so much in the four days of the workshop, and I know I will never see
the same way again! I was inspired and loved the mountains of Virginia, but most
of all, I loved the company!! Everyone was great! I hope to do another workshop
soon! Please keep in touch when you stop for a moment.
"
Melanie Shalam, New
York, USA
"Thank you for a great workshop. It was so
much fun — what a great group. I was especially pleased to learn how to use my
manual settings and so much more!
"Thank you both for spending time
with me and for your very useful hints and suggestions. We're going
to Arizona next week, so I can try out my new tricks :-) !
"
Sandy Wittman, Illinois,
USA
"First of all, I had a great time. Pretty
part of the country and great folks with similar interests to hang out with.
"Add to that a chance to improve your
photo skills with enthusiastic and knowledgeable (and that's an understatement)
professionals to provide you all the assistance you need or want. A difference
rarely accommodated in a workshop I might add.
"You even threw in all-you-can-eat
pizza! What could be better than that? You two provide not only a great
photo workshop but a great experience as well.
"
Jim Crowley, Wisconsin,
USA
"The Savannah workshop will stick with me
for a long time. First off, I've never seen two photo-workshop instructors pay
as much attention to the specific needs of each participant as you all do. In
retrospect, each of us came into the Savannah workshop with different levels
of shooting experience and different objectives. Yet somehow you figured out
a way to add significant value to each photographer's thinking and toolbox ...
quite an amazing process to witness firsthand!
"Secondly, the locations we shot at in Savannah
yielded far more image opportunities than I anticipated after looking at Savannah
images available on the web. I learned several new items while out shooting,
e.g. experimenting with HDR and low-light conditions; and I ended up discovering
some oddities about my camera that I simply did not know AND won't forget.
"
"At the end of the workshop, it was eye-opening
for me to see other participants' images ... they captured a wide array of terrific
image opportunities that I just flat-out missed! Overall, a fun learning-by-doing
experience. Easy to recommend to my photo-buds!!! Will do again.
"
Goodloe Suttler, North
Carolina, USA
"The best thing about the Savannah workshop
was that it made my camera much more directly an extension of my eye. Arnie and
Margo gave me fantastic one-on-one instruction, especially on how to find the
best shot. With them by my shoulder, I thought about what I wanted, isolated
and simplified. Those lessons will stay with me, because they are superb instructors!
"And that is sincerely meant. Will be watching
for the next workshop opportunity that works for me.
"
Nathan Dean, Florida,
USA
"We loved the workshop! Margo and Arnie are
the pros who have done it all but possess the uncanny ability to engage and communicate
with photographers of any skill level. I never knew 12-hour days could be this
much fun!
"
.
"Please let us know when you guys are doing
one in Asheville. You guys are great!
"
John Brooks, North
Carolina, USA
"I wanted to send a note thanking you for
the wonderful photography experience in Savannah. I learned so much that I feel
I now have a whole new outlook on photography -- many new horizons to work towards.
"I would especially like to thank you for
the hospitality you showed my wife, Keith. She had a really good time and now
has a much better appreaciation of my hobby (which will help a lot when I want
to add new gear). We look forward to joining you again in the future.
"
Wes Kremkau, Maryland,
USA
"You are not [going] to believe this—our "Nets
at Dusk" photo which I took waiting for that 6 o’clock ferry earned me a
Nine in my club’s competition tonight. It is the first time I got a Nine, and
I’m bursting with pride. However, a lot of the credit goes to you all who really,
really helped to make it even more magnificent that it was from the camera. The
gradient tool made the sky just perfect. It is being framed and double matted.
Ed might have to add an extension to the house so it will get the right light!
" Ed and I really enjoyed our workshop
with you and hope to take another one soon... We had a wonderful time
and learned so much. Thank you for making Ed feel so welcome.
"
Alice Langholz, New
York, USA
"I want to thank you very much for your time
and generosity in sharing your passion for photography with me during the workshop.
It was an incredible photographic and personal experience...
" You have changed my perspective
on photography. I walk in the street, and I do not see things quite
the same. I think that you have helped me to expand my photographic
capability by a lot.
" Your workshop structure is excellent.
It is not only oriented to taking pictures, it also covers the production
of a finished product. That was very important for me at the beginning
of the workshop, and the results have greatly exceeded my expectations.
You have also make me realized that money spent on a workshop has a
lot lot more real value compared to spending the same amount on photographic
equipment.
"For me, I do not have a dream of
making money with photography. It is a passion and a great way to maintain
my psychological equilibrium while doing challenging projects. I want
to push my expertise as much as possible while enjoying the process.
You told us at the beginning that you would push us and that is exactly
what you did. You did it without being sarcastic; you did not put our
mistakes in our face. I thank you for that. I came back home with some
good images but also with the beginning of understanding of what makes
a WOW image compared to just a good one.
"Finally and not the least, I think
that I now have friends somewhere in North Carolina.
" Cheers till the next time we meet.
"
Alain Roy, Québec,
Canada
"I had a blast, [and] I miss you guys already!
It was fantastic and I am amazed what wonderful pictures we all came home with....
"Big hugs to you and Arnie...and
Jim too!

"Hi everyone,
"I really had hoped to get this note out sooner
upon returning from an amazing week with Margo, Arnie, and all of you. I need
to say thanks. I’m very grateful for everything I learned from everyone ... our
instructors and my fellow students alike. Everyone’s openness and willingness
to share his or her ideas and constructive criticism was amazing and powerful
beyond measure. I only hope I can put it into practice each time I pick up my
camera. 'Simplify and isolate.' Those words don’t stop ringing in my head.
"
Tom Dwyer , New York,
USA
"I just wanted to let you know how much I
enjoyed the Moab Workshop. I'm sure you can appreciate that choosing a photography
workshop on the internet, without any trusted recommendations from familiar independent
sources, is a huge leap of faith. It truly exceeded my expectations.
"As you know, I had little, if any,
experience with landscape photography, and I came to the workshop with
somewhat dated equipment and virtually no familiarity with PS or LR2.
Between the six students there was a broad range of knowledge, experience
and equipment. It felt like a small country elementary school where
students from grades 1 (me) to 6 (Dave) were taught together in the
same class. I was astonished by your infinite patience, your infectious
enthusiasm, and your endless stamina. I had trouble keeping up to you!
"I can't believe how much I learned
in such a short period of time. Although the days were long (and I mean
long!), I didn't mind because that was exactly why I was there... to
learn.
"Thank you so much for such a memorable
photographic experience. You have reinvigorated me to take it up a notch
or two. I have mentioned the workshop to some photography friends, and
I could see them salivating as I described the workshop. I have no doubt
that I will be back for more, with or without my friends. Please give
a special thank you to Arnie for sharing his rich insights into creating
photographs, rather than taking snapshots. I would have stayed another
day if I had known how invaluable that slideshow was going to be! I
also appreciate the individual attention he showed me at Arches on Saturday.
"Thanks again for such an outstanding
experience.

"I departed Moab Sunday afternoon, planning
on a three-hour drive to Cortez, CO. It took me five hours, as I made at least
ten stops for photo opportunities that I would have never seen before the workshop.
Margo, I kept hearing your voice in my head — watch your frame; don’t waste pixels;
move up, down, left, right; look behind you...

"I should be the person expressing thanks
to both you and Arnie. From your end, it's probably a story that you have heard
a million times, but from my end what you and Arnie gave me will last me a life
time. I do not see my results as snaps or just pictures, as they evoke an emotion
in me and likely my viewers too .... all because of you two.
"You hold classes not just to improve
students skills, but also to develop disciples of BCPA. Well, my dear,
you let this Genie (called Joe) out of the bottle, and now you cannot
put me back in. I am proud to have been one of the people in whom you
and Arnie invested the equity of your experiences, and I am a BCPA Ambassador.
"Finally
...... Beyond our 'business transaction',
my personal wish is that we have made a
connection which will remain strong for
years to come. You are both wonderful human
beings and I would love to have the pleasure
of sharing some 'grape juice' with you
many more times in the future.

"The Wine Country of France workshop struck
the right balance between shooting, processing, critiques, and good fun. The
lessons were designed to challenge how we think about photography as well as
provide perspectives that can lead to more personal creativity. In Burgundy we
were able to get into places and meet people your average wandering person would
not find.

"We really loved our week with your team.
Let's say that we are enthusiatic about getting better! And, I am sure that next
time, Marie-Jo will be a student.
"Thank you again!

"I hope you're safely back in North Carolina.
I feel bad that I was unable to say good-bye to you. Nonetheless, I want you
to know that I had an amazing experience at the workshop. I learned so much,
and on top of that, had so much fun. I look forward to taking another workshop
with you... You all are very special people.

"I learned more about how to make a good photograph
in three days of a Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventure workshop than I had in the
previous five years of reading and experimenting on my own.

"Phyllis and I both enjoyed the workshop immensely.
I truly did not know what to expect, but the workshop far exceeded any expectations
I may have had. I was also thrilled that Phyllis found that she enjoyed photography,
and I was much appreciative of the reception that you guys gave her.
"I learned so much, but I am sure
my retention will need refreshing. I thank all of you for spending so
much individual time with me, I certainly did not expect this. I hope
to take workshops in the future... Phyllis even suggested that after
she became a little more experienced that maybe we could do some private
training since we are close.
"Again, thank you for a wonderful
experience.

"My son, Pete, and I both wish to thank you
for a wonderful workshop. It far exceeded our expectations. We found all three
of you to be more than helpful and both patient and thorough in answering all
our questions. Your critiques were gentle and yet penetrated to the problems
of the images under discussion. And the little impromptu birthday celebration
was such a surprise to me!
"
"I have just gotten around to looking
at the disk you sent me and WoW, I'm blown away! The disk alone is worth
the price of the workshop. Thank you so much for this gift.
"
and yet later...
"Guess what? My lighthouse picture won a first
in the News & Observer travel contest and they are sending me $... Thank
you again for such a great workshop. I am looking forward to Virginia!
"
Don Simpson, North

"Wow! You have successfully provided me with
one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of my life. While I learned
a great deal about photography, it was so much more than that! It was about creating
wonderful memories, enjoying new experiences, making new friends, and leaving
my photographic comfort zone. Thank you for helping open my eyes to a myriad
of new and exciting photographic possibilities. You both went above and beyond
the call of duty. Honestly, I'm at a loss for words. You are simply the best!!!

"I just returned from the Northern New England:
Fall Foliage workshop put on by Margo Pinkerton and Arnie Zann. This was my third
photography workshop in the last two years and was the most useful for how it
helped me to develop as a photographer. I came to it with hopes of capturing
beautiful fall foliage, which I did, but more importantly I made a great leap
in the quality of my images based upon the close attention given to me by both
Margo and Arnie.
"They are both able to communicate
in such a way that the suggestions take hold and transform good images
into special images. They care about the workshop participants, something
that was missing from my most recent workshop experience. There is nothing
hurried about these two. We would stay at a location for however long
it took to capture the light. Often we were still out in the field after
the sun went down so we could experience a quality of light that many
photographers fail to even know exists.
"Without any hesitation,
I would strongly recommend Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures
for anyone interested in taking their photography to the next
level, wherever they may currently be. Not only do you receive
generously of their time and expertise, but you also have a
great time making images. To know Margo and Arnie is to love
them. If your passion is photography, then you need to share
it with these two, because they will reflect it back to you.
"
"I have already had two
people inquire as to the workshop after looking at my images.
Hopefully they will result in future attendees.

"The Northern New England Photo Workshop was
an experience of a lifetime for me. TBC and Company were a delight to be with.
Thank you both for a fantastic week.
"
Jim Rowse, New Hampshire,

"I want to thank both of you for providing
me with the wonderful learning experience that I had in your recent workshop.
When I was heading home, I realized that as I was driving and looking at the
scenery around me, I was seeing and visualizing what was around me in a way that
I had never really done before. I did stop from time to time along the way to
photograph what would catch my eye. As I walked around, I was much better able
to visualize how I wanted the image to look.
"In particular, I am seeing light
now in a way that I had not really attended to prior to the workshop.
I now think about how to use light to make a much more impactful photograph.
I believe I am also better able to discern what it is that will make
an image compelling, rather than merely a pretty picture post card.
