Same Place — Different View, Zion & Bryce Canyon

I thought I’d do a Same Place – Different View from my perspective. When Arnie and I go out photographing, we are attracted to different scenes, but this article is a reminder that each of us can see different things from the same vantage point.

For those of you who read this blog, you know we just finished up a workshop in Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks. It was glorious, and Arnie and I had a great time helping our participants strengthen their vision and come up with some really wonderful photographs. Some of them will be in the next blog.

Now, for my different views…

While some of our participants were photographing with Arnie from a bridge, a few came with me to seek another scene. I was showing “my” group how to see patterns in the water and quickly came up with these two.© 2010 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. We got an early start to head over to Bryce Canyon to take advantage of the sunrise. Down into the canyon we hiked along one of the trails, and as I was walking back and forth with Arnie, checking on our group, I found these three images, taken from no more than 30 feet from each other.© 2010 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. We took our group up toward The Narrows, a classic location in Zion Canyon. In my last blog, I showed two takes on this spot, one of which is shown here again, and I was able to make yet another.© 2010 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. Arnie asked the group if they would like to shoot night skies. Most everyone said, “Yes,” and those who didn’t join us were disappointed the next day when they saw what we had done. I moved no more than ten feet and faced in the other direction for the second shot.© 2010 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. So, when you go out photographing, move left, move right, up or down. Turn around and see what else there is. You don’t have to go far as these photographs illustrate!

We always enjoy comments.

  1. Wow! I got chills looking at the night photos. What a fabulous experience to be there AND to take night photos. The color and texture in the Bryce Canyon sunrise shots are marvelous too.

Please keep this series going. It’s good to hear the message again and even better to see examples of the photos that result from a different point of view or angle.

    1. Ruth,

More and more people are commenting that they like this approach. As you say, it is a reminder to all of us to not just settle for the first view when you come upon a scene or arrive at a location.

      Take care,

  2. Dear TBC,

Beautiful images of that part of the world. I will never be visiting this place, because I live in Amsterdam, and I want to narrow down my ecological footprint. So thank you for sharing. They are heartwarming.

In Holland where I live we have one small mountain in the most southern part near the German and Belgian boarder, where I grew up, well it is more like a huge hill, 327 meters above sea level. And believe me or not, it felt, as a child, like a mountain.

Again, thank you for sharing these warm and intensive pictures.

    1. Tess,

Thanks for writing. I know what you mean about ecological footprints, but while we do travel to places, we are very much of the Leave No Trace philosophy. I’m glad you can see these places vicariously through the blog. Soon, I hope to get up a new gallery of thiese incredible locations. Right now, we are in Canyon de Chelly, a very special place in the Navajo Nation.

      Take care,

  3. Margo,
Fabulous as always. Those night skies are spectacular! May I request a “sky session” the next time I see you? Pretty please? Hope you are all having a blast in Canyon de Chelly!

    1. Squirrel,

There is nothing like a moon-less light to see the sky. Of course, it helps to be out of the city and ‘burbs! Next time, we’ll try for some more.

We start tomorrow, but several people came in tonight, including Sir George!

      Take care,

      TBC

  4. Good stuff Margo. Can you share what illuminated the top of the rocks under night skies?

    Rick

    1. Rick,

Arnie did some rock climbing and lit them for us! Right! With his vertigo, an unlikely scenario.

It was actually the exquisite, putrid lights of nighttime road construction! Zion’s east entrance is under serious rebuilding. Apparently, the road was risking slipping into the canyon.

      Take care,

      TBC

  5. Margo:
As usual, beautiful work. The night shots are phenomenal! Those who didn’t trek out with you and Arnie missed a chance in a lifetime to add something that beautiful to their portfolio. Hopefully Yosemite will lend itself to a similar night excursion. Magnificent! Dave

    1. Dave,

Thanks. So glad you like them. You are right about those who chose to catch up on some sleep! And yes, we will be doing the same thing in Yosemite. It should be equally spectacular there, weather always permitting.

      Take care,

      TBC
