We had mixed feelings today. We love Caye Caulker and its laid-back feeling. On the other hand, we were really looking forward to returning to Cotton Tree Lodge and our friends there.
While Arnie slept in a slight bit, I went out to photograph. The sky was dark, portending a passing shower, but I decided to proceed. There were a couple of flowers I had in mind for this morning, and I spent a half hour or so before the rains came doing some macro work.
After breakfast and saying goodbye to new-found friends, Scott and Nick, the taxi took us down to the airport. I love these island airports. They tickle my fancy. Check out the luggage carts and the whole feel of the place. Across the way, where you can’t see, two eagles were in their nest high atop a telephone pole.
We hopped over to Belize City, then to the municipal airport for the trip down to Punta Gorda. Once there, the Lodge arranged for us to be taken to the Moho River for the boat ride up to the Lodge. Some people go overland, but I really enjoy the river trip, seeing the various birds and Green Iguana, and feeling the wind in my face as we speed upriver.
I have to share our cabana with you. They are made of rosewood, thatched in the traditional manner, and have verandas with hammocks off the back. This year, Hibiscus blossoms were laid out on the bed in a pretty design. We unpacked, and as I went into the bathroom, something immediately caught my attention.
You should have seen the toilet. Don’t laugh. We’ve all been in hotels with the strip across the seat, so you think you know it has been freshly cleaned.
In this case, we knew it had been, but look at what they did! Someone had picked leaves off one of the plants and made a pretty design with them. Doesn’t your hotel do this?
After getting organized and going out on the veranda for some quiet time (I actually snoozed in one of the hammocks), we took a walk.
We always like to check out the organic garden, then continued along the board walk. The jungle beckoned me, as I heard the Howler Monkeys and hoped to see some. That was not meant to be, but it was lovely.
On the way out, the light was really nice, backlit the way we often like it. We came back out into the sunshine, saw the horses and goats, then made our way back to the Lodge where I sat down to download a few images and write this blog!
Tomorrow, the first of our group arrive. We’ll be out somewhere exploring and photographing and will see them at supper. It is fun to be back here!
