During the day, from early morning when it gets light enough to late afternoon when the shade blocks out the interesting light, Arnie and I have been adding to our photographs for our exhibition next summer, Tropical Impressions from Belize.
We are understandably not showing them here until after the show ends in July.
And for those of you who will be in North Carolina or southern Virginia, let us know, and we’ll send you an invitation to the reception July 14, Bastille Day.
Considering that where we’ve been in Belize, a number of people speak Creole with a French infusion, that seems appropriate.
So, when the light no longer glows on our exhibition matter, we head to the west side of the island for the sunset. Sunsets can be a dime a dozen, but we always try to make ours different.
The images you see in the blog were all made within an hour of one another, but what a difference that hour can make.
It is why we tell people to wait for the light, to be patient. So much is missed by people who leave as the sun sets. The light just keeps getting better and more interesting, we think.
As a sailor who has not recently had the opportunity to feel the sea breezes in my face and hear the lap of the waves on the hull, I am always looking at the water and the patterns on it.
Sailors and any good boat people, for that matter, read the water as others read a manual. Earlier, the patterns were telling tales of fish just below the surface, of a funny current that made one area calmer than the rest, but they were not in the right place for my photographs.
While I continued to make more images, I think this one is my favorite for the day. The way that upper cloud looked as though it were escaping, the color on the water, the red band of post-sunset drama, the darkening of the blue as the stars came out — all of that came together for me.

Mark July 14 on your calendar at the Alamance County Arts Council in Graham. If you don’t already know it, it’s lodged in a wonderful building with spacious rooms and lots of wall space! We have the two front rooms plus the large front entry.

What a wonderful use of boats on the horizon at sunset. It makes all the difference to have all of those interest points along that line. Wonderful light and cooperative clouds. Wish I had been there. Let me know where the exhibit will be and I will try to arrange a business trip to coincide with the opening. Dave

So glad you liked them. Being a sailor, it was a no-brainer. And what a glorious evening it was!
We would love to see you at the reception. Because of our European workshops, we won’t be around for the “opening” and thus elected to have the reception towards the end of the exhibition when we were back home.
The date of the reception is July 14, and I will be sure to put you on the invitation list. For anyone else reading these comments, just let us know, and we’ll do the same for you.
The venue is really a wonderful building with large wall space. We feel very lucky to have a show there.
