Savannah 2011, Day 1

Well, everyone is here. It promises to be another great group. So far there have been lots of laughs, some good questions, and some challenges this afternoon. After our introductory session and a late lunch, we went out to one of the historic streets while the sun was still pretty strong.

Arnie and I warned everyone, but that’s different from dealing with it in the great outdoors. We encouraged them all to look for subjects that would not have that harsh contrast between bright brights and dark shadows.

This is not a time for us to shoot, but I did manage to get off two “frames.” This one was my challenge to myself to cope with the light.

The scene caught my eye, because of the gentle, dappled light. I also have a thing about windows and doors.

It harkens back to my first camera and making photographs at age eight, long before windows and doors became an ism. I like to think I do them well, and I try to pick ones that are different in some way.

This was today’s offering. And, it was also a One Shot photograph. I barely had time for this one before someone had a question.

It pays to know or learn your settings, because sometimes you only have a brief moment to make a photograph. In this case, I noticed a few minutes later that the light had changed drastically. The freshly-painted, green “eyebrow” over the window had lost its subtle luster, and the light on the brick wall had gone. Poof!

Since it was our first day, we didn’t stay out late but returned to the hotel for our traditional wine-and-pizza reception, and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

We always enjoy comments.

  1. Really like your take on the window with the bricks just giving a light glow. The “Contessa” hits the moment!!
