We’re back in Maine only this time, way Down East in Acadia.  It’s a term sailors use, as to get to this part of Maine, one must sail down before the wind (wind at one’s back) in an easterly direction. Look at a map, if you don’t believe the easterly part!

I first met this area of Maine when I was not yet into my teens, and that was more than a decade or two ago. Every summer, my dad would take us sailing on our wonderful, classic, wooden boat.

It was untrammeled back then, and off season, as we are now, it is still relatively untrammeled.  I would not like to be here in summer, that’s for sure.

Arnie and I have been here scouting for our upcoming workshop, while MooseCat and his sitters take care of the house. All the places along the coast are places I sailed into with my dad. I have spent a lot of time here over the years, and it is good to return.

But, wouldn’t you know it; the forecast is for rain next week.  Then again, it has been forecast more than once since we arrived, and we have yet to see one drop of precipitation.

For these three shots, I moved not more than six feet. I couldn’t, as I was surrounded by splashing surf on either side and slippery rocks more toward the water. As it was, my tripod legs saw a little bit of the Atlantic.

The first image at the beginning of the blog was done with the afterglow of the sun. There was detail in the sky that I wanted to feature, thus the vertical format.

For the next one, I wanted to give the feeling of the expanse of the far horizon, with nothing between those islands in the distance and Spain. The light was beginning to fade, and there was a gentle feel to the scene.

The light was almost gone, save for a little moonlight, so I tweaked the Kelvin a tad to accent the natural blue tint that I saw.

You recognize the rocks in all three shots, yet they each have a different feel, partly because of the composition, partly in the post-processing. Same Place, Different View!

So, the next time you are out, work the scene. See how many different ways you can render it. I haven’t shown you all the ones I did from this location, just these three.

We always enjoy comments.

  1. Sorry, thought the first couple were early morning. Teach me to read a little closer! Still great photos.

  2. Beautiful early morning photos Margo! Looking forward to more blog photos from Maine. Have been going through blog withdraw since before the infringement blogs. Have great trip/workshop in Maine.

    1. John,

Thanks for the compliments on the late-afternoon photos! ;-} I’ll be back on track, now that the infringement blogs are done. I think we caught the attention of Zenfolio, including the CEO who received comments other than ours.

Take care, from foggy Maine (yippeee!),

    1. Thanks, JC! I appreciate that. This morning brings fog, so who knows what we’ll have this afternoon after our private Lightroom workshop.

      Take care,

      TBC
