Same Place, Arches Students ’11

Same Place — Different View

We are back from Costa Rica, and I actually have some time to catch up a bit.

The students’ gallery for Arches & Canyonlands National Parks 2011 is published, and there were a few good examples of Same Place – Different view to share and to inspire others.

One of our favorite spots is an overlook in Canyonlands National Park, one that our participants find inspiring, too. Here, we show three different effects. Mary chose to do a pre-sunrise shot evoking a moody feel, while Larry preferred to wait until the rising sun was hitting the easterly-facing fins and other formations. Barry did a similar view to Larry’s, but his stance and angle, along with camera settings gave the scene a different feel.© 2011 Mary Cuyler. All Rights Reserved. Balanced Rock is one of the signature sites in Arches National Park. The challenge is to photograph it differently. Two of our participants did just that. Jeff put it subtly and out of focus behind a gnarled, dead tree, while Giuseppe approached it from a different angle, literally, and added a person for a sense of scale.© 2011 Jeff Wilkes. Another popular site in Canyonlands affords limited space for photographers. One has to select one’s spot carefully for the desired composition and effect. Ravi went for an overall view, capturing many of the geological features, while Tim homed in on one grouping and used the light to give it a soft, layered effect.© 2011 Ravi Avva. So, as always, when you visit an oft-photographed location, make your shot different; make it yours.

  1. Wow! I looked at the galleries and they look great. I had forgotten how wonderful some of those photos are. And these same-place images are fun, too.

    1. Harvey,

We’re proud of the work of our participants. If they make you want to be there, they have succeeded in their vision.

      Take care,
