Day 07 – From Inverness to The Isle of Skye along the Lochs
There is an old Scottish song, first written down, they say, in the early 1800s, that goes…
O where and O where does your highland laddie dwell;
O where and O where does your highland laddie dwell;
He dwells in merry Scotland where the blue bells sweetly smell,
And all in my heart I love my laddie well.
Our first stop, after a leisurely breakfast (people were still jet-lagged), was Urquhart Castle, one we had revisited during scouting. We got there right at opening time, and people scattered to find their own shots. It was a lovely day, but fortunately, clouds also came over. (Some of you may remember Blue Skies, Who Needs’em.)
Sue, our “advance scout”, talked to the guide, and he warned us that a boatload of tourist was due to arrive around 10:30. He even came to warn us when the gaggle of tourists were about to arrive at the ruins.
Everyone here is no nice and helpful. There is nothing like Scottish hospitality.
Eventually, we tore ourselves away from that castle and headed for the next, but it was time for lunch, so we went a little beyond to a charming little village where we enjoyed our food outside on picnic tables. It was too early to head for the next castle, as the light was still too hot, but we still found images in the little village.
Eventually, we made our way back to Eilean Donan Castle and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon there. It is amazing, as I think I have written before, how there can be no one at a certain vantage point, but as soon as we go there, swarms of fly-by shooters land, usually walk right in front of you and your tripod, and just stand there. Ah well, such is the life of a photographer! Occasionally, I will politely say, “Excuse me, when you are finished…” Sometimes, I have to be a tad more direct, but there is no advantage to being as rude and thoughtless as they are.
Next stop? Hmmm, depends upon the weather that is capricious at best.
