Day 01 – Up into The Narrows
The first day of a workshop is always about our Principles of Photography. It is really the one classroom session, as the other mid-day session are devoted to imaging and critiques.
Once again, we have a really nice group. Arnie and I always remark on how lucky we are in this regard.
Today was about the Virgin River up into The Narrows. There is little time for us to shoot, but we did manage to get off a few shots.
Just as we challenge our participants to go beyond their comfort level and make a photograph theirs, we do the same for ourselves. How many different shots can one do at The Narrows? If we were alone … tons, but that is not our job on a workshop.
I loved mine from last time (see above), and I was not going to improve on that while working with our group, nor was Arnie, so we took a different tack.
We are always talking about light. Sure, I could, in theory, do another post-card view, but to what purpose? they’ve been done dozens of times before by others, and with exceptions, they tend to all look the same.
But the play of light on the water attracted both Arnie and me, and we pointed it out to our participants. For me, the day was about the water. In this scene, I did a same place – different view approach. You will recognize the scene, but each has a markedly different look.
