Arches Canyonlands 2012, Day 03

Day 03- Another Overlook and an Old Friend

It was another early morning. The distances are far in these parks, but the early hours mean that we have some locations to ourselves when we first get there. There is a stillness in the air, broken by the occasional whisper of Ravens’ wings as dawn breaks.

This morning, we thought we would be skunked. There was a cloud cover, and while there were hints of breaks in the clouds, we weren’t sure we would get any rays of sun streaking across the landscape. Still, the sky was moody with lots of texture. Then, the magic happened.

“There’s the light,” Arnie and I called.

“Look over there,” as we pointed in another direction.

“WOW, look at the way it is tipping those buttes,” a moment later.© 2012 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. From Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. As we look this way and that, the magic continued to happen. It was fabulous! Looking down on the plateau before us, the shadows whispered across. I decided to do a black-and-white image.© 2012 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. From Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures. Finally, the clouds totally took over, but they provided a wonderful backdrop to this tree. For me, it added a starkness to the twisted shape.© 2012 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved. Time to head back to Jailhouse Café for another tasty breakfast, then back for more imaging. The light mid-day is harsh, especially in these parts. The colors bleach out, and the contours flatten. For us, it is uninteresting.

We always have to visit another iconic location in Arches, Balanced Rock, but each time, Arnie and I challenge ourselves to do a different shot. This year, I decided to dwarf this rock formation with a snaggly tree. I felt as though the tree were reaching over this “little” rock. And then, I decided I liked it in black and white. I haven’t decided if the tree is benevolent or malevolent. It reminds me of those scary Arthur Rackham trees!© 2012 Margo Taussig Pinkerton. All Rights Reserved.
