Introductions
It is always fun to welcome back old friends, as so many of our alumni have become personal friends. It is very special to us.
We also enjoy welcoming new participants and getting to know them. For this workshop, there is a half-and-half mix — half alumni and half newbies — plus two “Spousal Units,” one alumna, one new. It promises to be yet another great group.
We gathered for our classroom session for welcoming, introductions, our philosphy, camera set-up, our “Principles of Photography,” and an overview of the week to come.
After lunch and discussions, we took off for our favorite ghost town in this area, a wonderful eclectic collection of back-to-the-60s dwellings, old mining town buildings, most in ruins, crumbling mining shacks, and a section with an interesting display of art work, including what Arnie and I call Anatomically-correct Lego Lady.
There is always a lot to photograph, and people can spread out as they seek their own vision.
Arnie and I worked with as many participants as we could track down. I think we covered everyone. This is not our time to photograph, but we usually manage to get in a shot or two. For me it was two.
The one above is an oft-photographed building, usually done in the stark of day. I loved looking through the windows at the mountain range beyond.
We eventually all ended down at the artists’ area. Arnie and I worked with different individuals and groups to show them about light painting. There were some really cool shots they made.
There is a group of ghostly creatures, and I have favorite whom I keep revisiting, taking a different approach each time. I had fun with this year’s interpretation.
Some people did some star shots, but with an early start on the morrow, it was time to head back to the hotel for food, libation, downloading of images, and for those Lightroom users new to us, computer set-up.
People had fun as they reviewed their images. Once again, it was time to head off and “sleep fast,” as Arnie puts it.
