Isle of Skye, Day 05

Fifth Day of the Workshop

In spite of the previous late evening, people gathered for breakfast around 8. Conversations run from the quiet to the raucous to the silly. Everyone is relaxed and enjoying themselves.

People drift into our imaging room, while others return to their rooms to work on their photographs before gathering for critiques. Again, the comments and critiques are thoughtful, and we awarded yesterday’s Golden Jim Bear Award for the most improvement. Jim, one of our alum spousal units had bought some chocolate bears, wrapped in gold foil, and suggested some sort of award. People laughed and loved it. After the current critique session, we awarded the second bear. All good fun!

We are on the Isle of Skye in a part of Scotland known for its single malts. One famous one, Talisker, is a few miles up the road from us, so we visited the distillery so people could buy some for themselves and/or take home as presents. We admired the various displays and choked over the price on one, a whopping £2,047.75. GASP! Look it up.

The light was getting better, and many people wanted to visit some famous pools down toward the coast. It was beautiful looking out over the Scottish landscape, a path snaking down into the valley and up the other side.

Some stayed up top, and the rest of us headed along the path, hopping across stones where the crossing over feeder streams was wider, discovering this treasure and that, waterfalls, cascades, colors in the rocks, gorgeous blue-green pools, a sense of wonder of the place.

We ended the day on an estuary at low tide, some old fishing boats bespeaking a better time, no longer sea worthy. What tickled my funny bone was a bathtub in the middle of a pasture. For city folk, this may sound odd, but farmers in many parts of the world have found a bathtub a terrific watering trough for their flocks and herds. After, if one wants to change the water, one just pulls the plug and drains what is in there. This particular model, however was unusual, in that it looked brand new and had gold faucets.

It was time to returned to our hotel. After a full day, and we all packed it in and slept quickly!
